The site turned out to be an absolute gem. We arrived on the 26th September towards the end of our holiday and stayed for a week. Below are a few more facts and a little story of the most interesting event of our trip.
The site is run by Mireille, her English husband Tim, and her mother Annette.Mireille
met Tim whilst working on the Isle of Wight and speaks perfect English.Tim spends
most of his time working on the surrounding farm.As we booked in Mireille gave me
a number of tourist maps of the area and spent some time showing us where the best
walks, cycle rides and tourist attractions were to be found. They are the most charming
people and gave us the warmest welcome we have ever received at a campsite. There
are plenty of toilets and showers and they are kept very clean. There is no bar
or club. The rocky beach is only about 800 metres away by footpath, down which we
used to ride our bikes. I am not sure about its safety for swimming as the sea was
always rough whilst we were there and I saw nobody in the water. If you look on the
map you will see that Lann Hoedic is on the Presqu’ile de Rhuys with the Atlantic
on one side and the Golfe de Morbihan on the other. A really delightful area and
all the details and links are on their website.
It rained most days but I was able
to get on with one of my ‘hobbies’ which is gathering shellfish from the shore at
low tide. The tide table which is essential for this was supplied by Mireille, who
was surprised to find an Englishman who ate shellfish let alone collect them himself.
There are not many of us I know but we have met others..
I usually go for mussels but the rocks at Lann Hoedic were covered in oysters and
it was very easy to get a couple of dozen for a meal. I did not want too many so
on my last expedition I concentrated on finding large specimens. I collected 14 about
the size of my hand, but that evening they were too much even for a glutton like
me, so I only opened and ate 7, saving the others till the following day.The largest
was kept till last and in that one I found 4 pearls. In fact I felt them in my mouth
and almost swallowed them. One is tiny, about 1 mm., but the others about 3 to 4
mm. in diameter.I dropped one in the grass beside the table and lost it so I now
have just two nice little pearls.Mireille was impressed and took photos to display
in her guest book as she had never heard of anybody finding pearls in the local oysters.
We are now known as Les Pecheurs de Perle de Lann Hoedic.
